“What’s Happening . . . In The Grape & Wine Industries?”
 Dr. Robert Wample, Director of Viticulture Enology, California State University-Fresno and has the administrator responsibility for both the department and research center.  He has a research program evaluating the use of irrigation management and mechanization on wine grape production.  Bob oversees the management of 150 acres of table, raisin and wine grape vineyards and a 50,000 gal. winery.


 

“Current & Future Grape Market Trends”

 Dr. Ray Folwell, Ag Economist, WSU-Pullman has recently accepted the position as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences, effective November 1.  He will be administratively responsible for the academic side of the Viticulture & Enology program and for implementing several changes in the academic programs for the College of Ag, Human & Natural Resource Sciences.
 

 

 

“New Cost Study on Wine Grapes”

Trent Ball is an Associate in Research for WSU-Pullman. Trent works for Dr. Folwell researching labor saving technologies in the asparagus industry, along with researching the economics of wine grape and Concord grape industries.

“Meet Jane Baxter-Lynn”

New Washington Wine Commission Executive Director. Jane has almost 30 years as a public relations/communication professional internationally, primarily in travel & tourism and franchising. She grew up in Rhodesia (what is now Zimbabwe), graduated from South Africa’s University of natal and has worked in South Africa, Europe and the U.S. Jane came from the Long Island Wine Council where she was Executive Director from 2000-2004.

 

 

 

“Producing Leaders”
Dave Roseleip, President of Agriculture & Forestry Education Foundation. Mr. Roseleip is President of the Washington Agriculture & Forestry Education Foundation, a private, non-profit foundation devoted to developing leaders for healthy farms, forests and communities. The foundation is supported by over 700 investors from around the state. To date 735 Leadership Fellowships have been awarded through the program. One of the foundation’s most recent graduates is our very own Dr. Julie Tarara.

Dr. Markus Keller, Research Viticulturist, WSU-IAREC, Prosser. Marcus received his PhD in Natural Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. He currently leads the viticulture research for Washington. In October, 2004, Dr. Keller received Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Distinguished Professor of Viticulture award.

Dr. David James- Dept. of Entomology, WSU-IAREC, Prosser. Dr. James has a BS in Zoology and his PhD in Entomology. His responsibilities at WSU-IAREC, Prosser are pest management research and has written more than 400 articles, including 120 scientific papers.

 

 

“Update on Pesticides”
Doug Walsh, Dept. of Entomology, WSU
IAREC, Prosser.  Dr. Walsh is an associate entomologist at WSU-Prosser. 
He received his PhD at UC-Davis in Entomology.

“Cover Crops for Organic Grape Production”

Dr. Robert Stevens, Crop & Soil Sciences Dept., WSU-IAREC, Prosser. Bob Stevens has been Extension Soil Scientist at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC) in Prosser for 20 years. His program has focused on nutrient management for irrigated cropping systems and the use of alternative nutrient sources. Special interest has centered on development of best management practices (BMPs) for irrigated agriculture to protect surface and ground water quality. Bob is currently serving as Interim Director at IAREC.

 

 

“Washington State University Wine & Grape Program”
Dr. R. James Cook, Dean College of Agriculture, WSU-Pullman. We are pleased to have with us today, Dr. James Cook, Dean for the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences in Pullman, Washington. He will be providing an update to the wine & grape program offerings as well as introducing new faculty.

Dr.Ekaterini Riga, Plant Pathology Dept., WSU-IAREC, Prosser.
Dr. Riga has a BS in Biology and a BA in German Literature from Fredericton, NB, Canada. She received her PhD in Invertebrate Zoology/Nematology from Burnaby, BC, Canada. Her responsibilities are 70& research, 20% extension and 10% teaching.

 

 

“Finding That Niche Market”
Dr. Michael Manz, Mountain Dome Winery, Spokane.
Dr. Manz is Director of child psychiatry at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. He is also owner/operator of Mountain Dome Winery. In June, Dr. Manz obtained the first license to operate a distillery in Washington since Prohibition was repealed in 1933 and recently was featured in a full page article in the Yakima Herald Republic

Dan McCarthy, Pest Board Coordinator, Okanogan County.
Dan McCarthy is the fieldman for the Okanogan County Pest Control Board. His job responsibilities is to respond to complaints concerning horticultural pests and diseases. He is also an apple & pear grower himself near Tonasket.

 

 

 

“Controlling Bunch Rot”
Dr. Gary Grove, Plant Pathology Dept.,
WSU-IAREC, Prosser. Dr. Grove received his PhD in Plant Pathology from Ohio State. He has extension and research responsibilities for tree fruits, grapes and hops at WSU-Prosser. Gary has received the WSU-college of Ag Team Excellence Award and elected Councilor of the American Phytopathological Society.
